Reviving and revitalising languages in Australia is incredibly exciting work. These VCE students have a spectacular opportunity. But, at the same time, I am saddened by how quickly we still destroy our living Indigenous languages. I am lucky to be able to live and work with people still using their language, still creating words and developing new ways to explain the world with an ancient tongue. But each generation of kids that doesn't get taught how to read, write, think and learn in their own language loses just a little bit more to English.
